As many Australians start to work from home (WFH), it can be tough re-adjusting to your new home office. Working from home has been linked to many benefits like increasing performance, business continuity, and achieving a greater work-life balance. However, if WFH is not well managed it can be problematic.

Here are some tips to make sure you make the most of your new working from home situation.

Build a permanent work-space

This is the first step when starting to work from home. It’s important to create a set working space to allow you distinguish ‘work’ from ‘home’. It’s important that this space is quiet or undisturbed, to allow you to focus on your task at hand. This could be an empty or spare bedroom, but if you’re pressed for space, set up a desk for your computer and office equipment.

If you are required to purchase new equipment or supplies while working from home, you can save on these home office expenses with Remunerator.

This includes items like:

Get comfortable office furniture

Comfortable office furniture is essential to WFH productivity. You will be working in this space every day.

Consider what sort of desk, shelves, filling cabinets and office chair would be suitable for your new office space. Ikea offer great home office furniture and equipment at an affordable price.

Set and keep to a routine

Set specific working hours and stick to them! You can afford to be more flexible when working from home.

Consider the hours where you are the most productive, i.e. if you are a morning person, start your workday earlier. Use these peak productivity periods to get through as much work as you can.

Enforce strict time for breaks and the end of working day, keep to this to ensure you’re not working nonstop.

Make to-do lists

When working from home, it’s up to you to monitor your progress.

It can be easy to lose sight of priorities, tasks, and deadlines. By creating to do lists at the start of your day you can review your priorities. Stick to this list. Set goals and time limits for each task. When each task is completed, cross it off this list.

Create a rewards system

This can be as simple as for every task completed you are rewarded with something like a snack, walk or short scroll through social media.

Another rewards system can include setting times of uninterrupted work, e.g. set 2 hours of uninterrupted work, when this is completed you can reward yourself.

This simple technique is effective and fulfilling.
