One of the key challenges to the uptake of EV ownership in Australia is the ease of charging accessibility. Especially when considering the target demographic being inner city living, young working professionals. For this target group, typically having an undercover carpark where a battery pack could be installed at their private property is uncommon.
When 80% of EV owners prefer to charge at home, this is crucial for governments to address to encourage widespread EV adoption.
The solution to this is making EV chargers available on street-side power poles. This solution has proven to be effective across Europe, London, the United States and Canada already!
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) recently awarded $871,000 to Intellihub, a local technology firm, to install 50 of these EV chargers across nine Sydney local councils including Waverley, Woollhara, Randwick, Lake Macquarie, Ryde, Singleton, Parramatta, Northern Beaches, and Inner West.
Intellihub estimates that one power pole street charger could service up to 10 households. If the trial of 50 chargers proves successful, there is the potential for 190,000 chargers to be installed across the country.
In the coming months, we will see these chargers being established across a variety of areas including high-density housing, shopping districts, hospitals and more!
