Transferring the registration
It is important for you to budget for the costs of transferring the vehicle’s registration into your name. If you are purchasing a used car, and the car is already registered, the seller needs to cancel the local registration first.
Then you have 14 days after purchasing the car to register the car under your name and address. If you are purchasing a new car, you will have to organise the rego of your new car.
If you plan on driving the vehicle home, and the vehicles registration is cancelled or unregistered, you will most likely need to apply for a temporary registered vehicle permit.
Roadworthy and safety certificates
In order to register the car in your home state, you must obtain a roadworthy and safety certificate. These costs vary from state to state, so check with the roads and transport department in your state to find out what the exact costs are.
Insurance
As part of the costs of registering your vehicle, you will need to budget for compulsory third party (CTP) insurance. Depending on the state, this cost can be automatically attached to the registration fee.
Getting the car to you
This cost will depend on how far the car located from you, if you decide to pick the car up yourself or have it delivered to you. There are freight companies that specialise in the delivery of cars interstate; however, this is a costly exercise. If you drive the car back itself, ensure that you budget for flight, fuel, accommodation and general expenses you will incur while travelling.

Organise a car inspection
It is highly recommended that you have the vehicle properly inspected before you buy it. This can be done by either:

- A Pre-purchase vehicle inspection service such as NRMA, RACV, RACQ, or a local trusted mechanic
Conduct a vehicle background check
It is highly recommended that you conduct a full check of the vehicle’s history. This informs you if the car has been written off or damaged, stolen, is under finance, the build and compliance dates, its sales history, and the consistency and accuracy of the odometer reading.
These checks can be completed by yourself through the Personal Property Security Register (PPSR) and your states roads and transport department.
