The artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT developed by OpenAI has taken the world by a storm since being released in late November last year.
We're still in the initial 'awe' stages of the program and businesses across the globe are considering how they can incorporate it into their operations.
Looking at the automotive industry, the GM vice-president of software-defined vehicles and operation systems Scott Miller has stated "ChatGPT is going to be in everything".
Some possible functions of artificial intelligence for a driver in the vehicle include:
- Access a car manual.
- Provide information on car functions.
- Make servicing appointments.
- In-vehicle personal assistant.
- Sophisticated infotainment systems.
- Sophisticated driver safety technology.
During the shopping experience, there are many ways ChatGPT can be helpful including:
- Personalizing the shopping service.
- Answering questions about the car.
- Explaining financing options like novated leasing.
Dealers and manufacturers can adopt the use of ChatGPT to simplify their own processes:
- Scheduling appointments.
- Analyzing customer data.
- Personalized marketing strategies to customers.
- Create search-friendly website copy.
- Car descriptions.
- Content creation.
- Customer support.
Many manufacturers are partnering with technology companies to help artificial intelligence powered autonomous vehicles. Two key partnerships include Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) with NVIDIA, and General Motors (GM) with Microsoft.
Artificial intelligence will allow for connectivity on the road between vehicles. This means that cars will be able to communicate with each other on the road in the way drivers can. For example, if an autonomous car slows down, it can send signals to other autonomous cars on the road and they can adjust their speed accordingly.
If used appropriately, ChatGPT has the ability to revolutionize the car industry. We even asked the program itself how it will impact the industry and here's its response:
"As an AI language model, ChatGPT can potentially revolutionize the car industry by providing accurate and instant assistance to car manufacturers, dealerships, and customers. ChatGPT can assist in designing and testing new car models, optimizing production processes, providing personalized customer service, and improving the overall user experience through natural language interactions. Additionally, as a machine learning model, ChatGPT can continuously learn and adapt to new data, making it a valuable tool for identifying and predicting trends in the car industry."
Currently, ChatGPT is limited in it's understanding of its full impact of the future due to not having enough information to make this prediction. While it's a powerful language model, it does have some limitations. These include:
- Bias: ChatGPT can potentially exhibit bias based on the data it was trained on, which may not be representative of the entire population.
- Contextual Understanding: While ChatGPT can understand and generate responses based on individual sentences, it may not always grasp the full context of a conversation, which can lead to misunderstandings or misinterpretations.
- Creativity: While ChatGPT can generate response based on the patterns it learns from its training data, it may not be able to generate truly creative or original responses without human input.
- Limited Knowledge: ChatGPT's knowledge is limited to the data it was trained on, so it may not have access to the latest information or be able to provide in-depth answers to complex questions.
- Security: As an AI model, ChatGPT is vulnerable to cyberattacks, and its use can potentially compromise the privacy and security of user data.
This is expected to improve as people continue to add data and context to help the machine learn. We're excited to see how the automotive industry will adopt the use of ChatGPT and other AI technologies moving forward.
