As we have already cruised past the halfway mark of 2024, it's clear that electric vehicles (EVs) are dominating the roads in Australia.

With their growing popularity, the top models are setting the standard for what the future of driving looks like.

While Tesla remains the leader in the Australian electric-car market, discover which other models are leading the charge and rapidly closing the gap.

Electric Vehicles on the Rise

June 2024 continued the strong trend in EV sales that we've seen throughout the year.

This surge has been powered by strategic price cuts from key players, including Tesla. While Tesla continued to soar, BYD experienced a dip in sales, illustrating the dynamic and competitive nature of the EV market.

According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council, 9,939 full-battery electric cars were sold in Australia in June alone.

This represents a significant increase from the 9,120 sales recorded in May and pushes the total EV sales for 2024 past the 50,000 mark—a 14% increase over the same period last year.

Leading the Charge: Tesla's Dominance

As anticipated, Tesla led the way in EV sales halfway through 2024.

The Tesla Model Y topped the charts as Australia’s best-selling EV in June, with an impressive 2,906 sales, a substantial jump from May's total of 1,609. The Model Y also ranked among the top five vehicles sold overall during the month, standing tall alongside popular models like the Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Tesla continued its strong performance with the Model 3, which secured the second spot in EV sales for the month, attributing 1,777 sales in June.

This model remains a favourite among Australian drivers, solidifying Tesla’s leading position in the market.

Emerging Contenders

While Tesla continues to dominate, other EV manufacturers are making their mark.

The BYD Seal secured third place, despite a slight drop from May, with 706 units sold in June. The Volvo EX30, a newcomer to the top 10, made an impressive debut with 420 sales, taking fourth place.
