The Nürburgring racetrack is one of the most famous racetracks in the world, favored by motoring enthusiasts and manufacturers alike.

For 16 weeks of the year, the track is rented out by top tier car manufacturers, think Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz, to test out their latest vehicles.

Lapping the track in the fastest time possible has become a priority for brands and a powerful marketing tool for them. Holding the fastest Nürburgring lap time gives bragging rights to the title holder.

Here are the five fastest production cars, that you can drive on Australian roads, to date:

5. Lamborghini Huracan Performante

Lap time: 6:52.01s

Back in March 2017, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante took to the Nürburgring racetrack dressed in camouflage. Driven by Marco Mapelli, the lightweight V10 coupe smashed the record for the time, coming in at 6:52:01s with a top speed of 188mph.

4. Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Lap time: 6:47.3s

The Porsche 911 is one of the most popular sportscars on Australian roads today and has won awards over the years for being “the best premium sports car on the market”. First introduced in 1964, there are over 1 million examples of the vehicle produced and many variations to suit any drivers’ desires.

In late 2017, at the hands of Lars Kern, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS circled the track at a phenomenal 6:47.3s, knocking the Lamborghini off its fastest lap time throne.

3. Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

Lap time: 6:44.97s

Lamborghini’s second entry onto the list, within a year of being dethroned by Porsche, the Italian carmaker claimed back it’s crown with the Aventador SVJ with a time a whole 2 seconds faster at 6:44.97s.

2. Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

Lap time: 6:43.616s

As the reigning champions of Formula 1, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes is the runner up of the fastest production cars to lap the Nürburgring. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is described as having unprecedented performance – especially on the racetrack and in its own league of ultimate super sports car.

Clocking in at 6:43.616s, we can’t disagree.

1. Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey-Racing

Lap time: 6:43.300s

The current champion, and second 911 entry on this list, the 911 GT2 RS Manthey-Racing clocked in at 6:43.300s again at the capable hands of Lars Kern in 2021.

In collaboration with Manthey Racing, Porsche developed the ‘Manthey Performance Kit’ that featured on the record-breaking vehicle and can ordered on all European orders of Porsche 911’s. They’re gradually releasing it to other markets, so we might be seeing the kit available in Australia in the future!
