New EVs. Lower prices. More choice.
As of April 1st this year, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are no longer eligible for the government’s Electric Car Discount. A key change that marks a new chapter in Australia’s push toward zero-emission transport.
While this shift may catch some drivers by surprise, it also puts the spotlight on fully electric vehicles (EVs), which remain FBT-exempt – and more cost-effective than ever through novated leasing.
Staying ahead of these changes is important.
That’s what the Remunerator EV Hub is for.

What’s Driving the EV Boom?
Once considered a niche market, EVs are now a popular choice for drivers. More Australian’s than ever are making the switch to electric power.
In 2023, there were 98,409 EVs sold (that’s up 60% from 2022).
In 2024, that number jumped a further 16% to 114,000.
Here’s what’s powering the boom:
Australian Drivers Have More Choice Than Ever
Since the Electric Car Discount launched in July 2022, the number of eligible EVs in Australia has exploded. Drivers now have real choice from SUVs, compact cars, and even people movers.
As of April 2025, there are over 40 different EV models available in Australia that qualify for the Electric Car Discount (Electric Vehicle Council).
Lower Prices Across the Board
Fierce competition has driven EV prices down significantly.
Tesla, once the dominant player in 2022–23, had to slash prices in 2024 to keep up with newcomers like BYD and MG — brands now offering high-quality EVs at prices that rival traditional petrol cars. BYD even has models starting under $30,000.
But the value of going electric isn’t just in the sticker price.
EVs have lower running and maintenance costs — no fuel, fewer moving parts, and less wear and tear. That means a lower total cost of ownership over time, especially when paired with the Electric Car Discount.
With more models now priced under the luxury car tax threshold, there are more eligible EVs than ever before — giving drivers more choice and more ways to save.
Are You Considering Going Electric?
With more models, updated pricing, and over 40 EVs now eligible for the Electric Car Discount, it’s a great time to explore what’s out there.
