It's happening!

Victorian drivers will finally be able to add their driver's license to their digital wallets by 2024.

Digital licenses have quickly become the norm across Australia with NSW and SA offering the feature since 2019 and 2017 respectively.

Currently the program is on a regional pilot program to be rolled out in Ballarat during July.

From June onwards, Ballarat residents will be able to participate in the program through Service Victoria or VicRoads websites.

What is a Digital Driver License?

A digital driver license offers drivers an easy, secure, and private way to access their license from their phone.

Easily accessed via Service VIctoria or the myVicRoads app, drivers will be able to verify their identity, provide license status and prove you are over 18.

Traditional plastic cars will still be available.

What Are the Benefits of a Digital Driver License?

  1. Convenience: Digital driver's licenses can easily be accessed and managed from a smartphone app, eliminating the need to carry a physical license or make trips to a licensing office. This means that drivers always have their license with them and can present it quickly and easily when required.
  2. Enhanced security: Digital licenses have built-in security features, such as biometric authentication and encryption, which make them harder to forge or tamper with than physical licenses. This helps to reduce the risk of identity theft and fraud.
  3. Cost savings: Digital driver's licenses are cheaper to produce and maintain than physical licenses, which require printing, shipping, and storage. This means that governments can save money by switching to digital licenses, that can be reinvested into other areas of road safety or infrastructure.
  4. Environmentally friendly: Digital driver's licenses are eco-friendly because they eliminate the need for paper and elastic, ultimately reducing waste and pollution.
